Nate Ivy coordinates the Service-Learning Waste Reduction Project for secondary schools in Alameda County, California and serves as the Regional Lead for Service-Learning in San Francisco Bay Area.  Prior to joining the Alameda County Office of Education, he taught American Studies at Irvington High School and served as the school’s service-learning coordinator helping to guide the school to National Service-Learning Leader School in 2000   He later helped Fremont Unified School District and the City of Fremont develop a vision for youth service-learning that includes the implementation of a district-wide service-learning grant.

Evan Goldberg coordinates a host of service-learning programs in Northern California including H3 Character Education at the elementary level and School & Community Violence Prevention programs for secondary schools.. He developed the Service-Learning Virtual Course featured on this site and created the Service-Learning for Leaders Class as an elective in the administrative credential program at Cal State East Bay. Evan Goldberg served as the Region 4 Service-Learning Lead for over a decade and has created a host of engaging training strategies for almost every service-learning audience.

Service-Learning Virtual Course

The Alameda County Office of Education teamed up with California State Univeristy, East Bay to create a "virtual course in service-learning." Designed as an entry level course in the pedagogy of service-learning, the course can be audited by clicking through the links on the menu bar of the "Course Sessions" tab at the class website: http://www.servicelearningcourse.org/. The course features streaming video lectures and project examples, selected reading materials, and reflective assignments.

Service-Learning for Leaders

The Alameda County Office of Education has partnered with Cal State East Bay to offer Service-Learning for Leaders during the winter academic quarter each year. Designed as an elective in the administrative credential program, this course focuses on integrating service-learning with school site leadership and campus wide reform initiatives. The course is also open to service-learning practitioners in leadership positions and hosts a number of aspiring service-learning coordinators, professional developers and non-profit staff each year.

The course is highly interactive and teaches the principles of high-quality service-learning. Highlights from 2009 included a panel of high school students engaged in service-learning, a session at the Alameda County Community Food Bank highlighting service-learning opportunities from a panel of social service agencies, a presentation of recent civic engagement research by Joe Kahne, and a session with Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Program Director for the Chavez Foundation.
